A shipment can fit inside a container on paper and still fail at the rear doors. Interior height, interior width and usable clearance all matter before freight ever reaches the ramp.

Published dimensions vary slightly by railroad, steamship line, manufacturer and equipment series. Use this page as a planning reference and confirm exact equipment when clearance is tight.

Domestic ISO Repositioning

Sometimes the right container changes the economics.

Most domestic intermodal freight moves in 53' equipment. But steamship lines periodically need 40' and 45' ISO containers repositioned from East Coast markets back toward West Coast ports and hubs.

Rather than moving that equipment empty, qualifying domestic freight may be able to move in the container at favorable repositioning pricing.

Availability is directional, equipment-specific and changes with current repositioning needs. Every opportunity is checked before quoting.
Different rate opportunity Qualifying repositioning lanes can create attractive economics compared with standard domestic equipment.
Right-sized equipment If the freight does not need the full floor length or cube of a 53' container, a smaller ISO box may be a better fit.
Less unused space A smaller box can reduce void around suitable freight and may simplify blocking, bracing and dunnage planning.
Before the Freight Loads

Three checks matter more than cube alone.

Dimensional fit is only the first step. A load still has to pass through the doors, leave usable loading clearance and comply with weight and drayage requirements.

Check the door first

The rear-door opening can be smaller than the interior dimensions. Freight must physically pass through it.

Leave usable clearance

Do not plan freight to the exact published interior dimension. Blocking, bracing and loading tolerances need room.

Weight can control first

Cubic fit does not guarantee a legal move. Payload, axle weights, floor strength and drayage rules may become the limiting factor.
